Edward Hopper @ Whitney Museum

Edward Hopper’s works first approached me with a charm of gloominess. When I found out an exhibition of his works was happening at the Whitney Museum I had to make time.

Seeing his works in real life for the first time, I found them very theatrical, which I liked even more. His use of light and its effect amplified the stories in the frame and let me imagine endlessly. As I continuously walked the space to see more of his works, I couldn’t stop thinking about their theatrical presence. Then I learned that he was indeed interested in theater - no wonder his works well blended to be Heize’s, a Korean singer-a-song writer, music video set. Afterward, I also found out that a movie was made solely with his works.

I enjoyed the everyday life he captured with his use of light, minimal spatial composition, and low-intensity colors. It partly reminded me of one of my favorite movies “Columbus” which showed the everyday life of people surrounded by calm minimal modern architecture - my curiosity about late 19th and early 20th centuries art and culture is starting to grow. Now that I added another meaningful experience, I hope this will come out one day in my creative process.

Possibly because it was on the weekend, there were full of people but I’m glad I went.

약간은 우울한 매력으로 다가왔던 Edward Hopper 작품들. Whitney Museum에서 그의 전시가 있어 다녀왔다.

실제로 본 그의 그림들은 훨씬 더 매력적이었으며 우울하다고 느꼈던 그의 그림에서 theatrical한 느낌을 많이 받았다. 완성작 속에 조명처럼 비춰지는 빛이 그림 속의 이야기를 극대화해 상상의 나래를 펴게 해주었다. '꽤 연극적이군"이라는 생각을 하지 않을 수가 없었는데 역시나 연극에 관심이 많았다고 한다. 헤이즈의 '헤픈우연' 뮤직비디오의 공간으로 괜히 잘 어울어진 것이 아니었다는 생각이 들었다. 나중에 알게 된 사실이지만 그의 작품만을 가지고 영화를 만들었다고 하니 그 매력을 나만 느낀 건 아닐꺼다.

빛을 통해 연출한 이야기와 일상 속의 공간과 구성 그리고 색을 통해 구현한 절재된 이야기가 좋았다. 모더니즘 건축의 미니멀한 공간을 배경으로 일상을 연출했던 좋아하는 영화 Columbus 가 떠오르기도 했다. 19세기 말과 20세기 초의 시대적 배경에 대한 궁금증이 점점 더 생기기 시작한다. 또 하나의 의미있는 경험이 내 안에 축척되었으니 언젠가 나의 Creative Process에 나타나 주길 바란다.

주말이어서 그런지 사람이 어마무시하게 많아서 정신은 없었으나 다녀오길 잘 했다.
